The fence is a visual cypher for the divide between fine art and popular culture, "us" and "them," those within culture and those without, rich and poor. The barrier is literal in this sense. The mud is just mud.


This understated duplex is also in front (or behind depending on your perspective) one of several bonded Customs warehouses that line the banks of the Bosphorus Strait, which separates East from West. (There, I said it.) Many of these buildings are now art galleries and exhibition spaces, but in the olden days they stored tobacco, minarets and miniskirts.
