The Free Soup House, Sahinbey, Gaziantep
Kiosk 11: The Free Soup House, Sahinbey, Gaziantep. Fully customised duplex free soup house (or ucretsiz corba evi).
This rare and highly sought after kiosk was spotted by our
correspondent in Sahinbey. Its interior is obscured, but one can assume it contains an electrically heated soup cooker in the shape of a cauldron, various
serving implements and an Ataturk photograph (plus soup-related
aphorism).
Sahinbey is near the Syrian refugee camps in the southeast of Turkey and is strategically positioned to serve delicious bowls (or cups) of steaming soup to those fleeing intolerable oppression, in a society that has no doubt broken down so much that it probably no longer serves a first course at dinner, not even slices of bread.
