The New Mosque (Yeni Cami) was built in what was once a neighbourhood of predominantly Jewish merchants as a demonstration of imperial muscle. Much the same is about to happen in Taksim Square with a really new mosque to laud over the existing Greek Basilica. As the saying goes, "Those who cannot remember the past don't to give a shit about architectural violence." Or some such.
