Chios (Sakiz Adasi)
Three kiosk (one orthodox and two proto) from the heavenly Greek island of Chios.
The island is famous for its mastic trees, which are the only ones in the world that produce the edible resin used in ice cream and sweets so loved by the Turks, and liqueur sipped by Chiosians.
Mastic is loved so much so that when the inhabitants of the island rose up against their Ottoman overlords in 1822, the sultan had almost all of the 118,00 population slaughtered in a fit of pique, leaving 1,800 alive to tend the trees.
