Ledra Street Border Crossing, Nicosia

Kiosk 17-22 (out of frame): Ledra Street border crossing, Nicosia, Turkish Cypriot side. A wall of five monoplex, duplex, heptuplex entry kiosks opposite mono and out-of-shot duplex exit kiosks containing Turkish Cypriot border guards, computers and air-conditioning as frosty as Greek-Turkish relations.

Surely, the apogee (from the Greek apogaion) of all kiosks, these six plastic huts are all that stand at the interface between the

Muslim East and the Christian West, or rather the unspoilt north and the homogenous EU south of the island.

By contrast, the single Greek Cypriot checkpoint a few metres away is made-to-measure and probably a public-private partnership that ran over budget by several billion euros during construction. It is also staffed by more guards, despite being smaller.
